The Importance of Craftsmanship in Design

Design isn't just about functionality. It can be about shaping an experience, connecting functionality with aesthetics.

Take a minute to think about why the the magnificent structures and desings of the past centuries aren't mirrored today. In our modern obsession with efficiency, the narrative of design has shifted.

The history of design and its importance was an important role in this shift. It began with the industrial revolution, that brought in an era where cheaper mass production replaced skilled craftsmanship. This transition birthed an age of brick buildings, bland skyscrapers, utilitarian structures devoid of the intricate beauty of past designs.

Although these designs hold true today, there is an opportunity to change this. This balance can influence functionality and asethetics to stay hand in hand. While functionality remains a crucial part of design, I advocate for infusing designs with beauty, warmth and comfort. Influenced by my father, an experienced carpenter, I have come to greatly appreciate the combination of functionality, detail and asethetics.

Designs do not need to sacrifice beauty on the altar of utility. By embracing the balancing form of function and beauty, I've crafted creations that not only serve their purpose but also demonstrate creativity. In an age where vanilla reigns over designs, I aim to inject a dose of vibrancy.

My goal is to prove that a thoughtful design is not a luxury but a crucial element.

The Doggie Diner project aimed to create an alternative for pet feeding by offering a compact, efficient solution. Unlike existing bulky designs for automatic feeders, my objective was clear. I wanted to craft a streamlined feeder with each component serving a distinct purpose.

Taking inspiration from the creativity of tiny house designs, I sought to maximize functionality within a minimal footprint. The result of these elements was a physical dog house-inspired feeder. This may not cater to every pet owner's taste but delivers efficiency for small to medium-sized dogs.

The feeder's design centers around simplicity and functionality. Its small roof and sleek rectangular structure house, as well as the addition of a discreet food distribution mechanism that can be accessed through a small opening at the front. Refilling the feeder is convenient for any pet lover– a simple hinge mechanism allows the roof panel to be effortlessly lifted, granting access to the storage bowl inside.

Process and Final Design

Free Range Chicken Coop

The Chicken Coop project was from my family’s desire to craft a more creative form of housing that went beyond the traditional square hut design. Important to the design was the concept of free-range living for our little chickens. Free range living allows chickens to go where everywhere to graze. There are many benefits to this – from fresh eggs, natural pest control to nutrient-rich fertilizer.

The chickens’ need for freedom to roam, meant that the coop needed to be adaptable and portable, allowing them to explore different areas of the yard while ensuring safety from predators lurking in the woods. There were many important factors that needed to be included in the design.

Transportability: While mobility wasn't as seamless as initially envisioned, the coop was designed to be movable with a clever setup involving inserted tubes for relocation.

Accessibility: The coop boasted easy access for both chickens and caretakers, with a ladder allowing seamless entry and exit for the birds and strategically placed access points for egg collection.

Comfortable Nesting Areas: Organized nesting boxes provided cozy spots for egg-laying, ensuring minimal disturbance to the chickens during collection.

Spaciousness: Ample room inside the coop allowed chickens to move freely and comfortably, promoting their well-being.

Safety: With threats from predators in mind, multiple locking mechanisms were incorporated to secure both the outside access and the upper levels of the coop, providing peace of mind for both chickens and owners.

Outdoor Exposure: The coop design encouraged outdoor exploration while providing shelter and security when needed, allowing chickens to enjoy the benefits of free-range living.

Aesthetic: A triangular roof design reminiscent of a basic house structure not only offered functionality but also added visual appeal to the coop, blending form with function.

Though challenges were encountered in achieving full transportability, the resulting coop successfully balanced practicality, safety, and aesthetics, showcasing the potential for other chicken coop designs.

Final Design

In crafting the automatic dog feeder and chicken coop, I wanted to elevate the concept of functional design beyond mere utility. Embracing craftsmanship, I connected each creation with personality, character, and transcending conventional expectations.

These projects exemplify my belief that attention to detail can transform everyday objects into new experiences. By infusing character into my designs, I want to not only meet the needs of users but to also enhance their lives. In a world with mass-produced goods, I remain steadfast in my commitment to crafting designs that stand apart, enriching both the function and the beauty of the spaces they inhabit.
